Do you know if your home’s electrical wiring has been checked in the last ten years? If not, it would be a good idea to call us in to take a look. We will never advise rewiring unless it’s absolutely necessary, but if you have ancient electrical wiring, you could be at risk of a fire and your home may not be safe.
If you need additional sockets, you may not need a rewire. We’ll let you know when we’ve done a check of your system and may be able to add new sockets there and then. If your fuse box has rewire-able fuses, it definitely needs changing. They were fazed out of new installations years ago. If you do have a new fuse box, it doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of the system has been upgraded, so it may still need to be checked.
Take a look around your home. Can you see any braided flex going up from your ceiling light fittings or black rubber cables around your consumer unit? Is there ever any overheating at socket outlets? If so, you may need a re-wire.
This is a residual circuit device which is for your protection because it disconnects the circuit if it detects a leakage current that could be dangerous. All consumer units should now include them. If yours doesn’t have one, get in touch.
If you are not getting power from a socket, pull out the plug carefully, listening for a buzzing or crackling sound. Then check both the socket and the plug for excessive heat or burn marks. If you hear, feel or see any of these, don’t put another appliance into the socket to test it again. You need some help from EF Electrical.
Always unplug your mobile phone charger after use. They have been known to cause fires if left in a live socket.
If you need to use a multi-way adaptor in a socket, don’t put in too many plugs at once. The weight puts an additional stress on the socket and there is a danger of electrical overload. It’s better to change to a double socket or get more sockets added.
